Free Health Care in San Francisco

Berkeley Free Clinic – Located in Berkeley at 2339 Durant Ave. This clinic treats colds, coughs, ear infections, skin problems, sexually transmitted infections, minor wounds, burns and yeast infections. Also offers HIV, TB and pregnancy tests. Has a dental lottery system for exams, extractions, fillings and x-rays (must arrive when the clinic opens that day, for an appointment later at night.)

Haight Ashbury Free Clinic – Offers various primary care services as well as pediatrics, chiropractic care, podiatry and HIV testing and treatment. Also offers a separate substance abuse treatment program. Located at 558 Clayton Street.

New Generation Health Center – STD testing and treatment for those age 24 or younger. Also provides birth control. 625 Potrero Avenue.

North East Medical Services – Services for residents of the northeast (downtown area) of San Francisco. Services are free for the homeless, sliding scale payments for all others. All types of care including dental offered. 1520 Stockton Street. Cantonese and Mandarin spoken.

San Francisco Department of Public Health – Makes clinic referrals for all health services. Diagnosis and treatment not provided on site, just referrals. 3850 17th Street.

South of Market Health Center – At 551 Minna Street in downtown, this clinic provides both primary care and dental services. Some free service for the homeless is available but not guaranteed. All others pay a fixed fee on the first visit and then on a sliding scale on all subsequent visits.

VA Medical Center at Fort Miley – Comprehensive health services for military veterans. All services free to homeless and low-income veterans except for dental and vision.

Dental Care

San Francisco Department of Public Health Potrero Hill Health Center – General dentistry services and emergency services. Root canals, fillings and extractions (no tooth replacement.) Free services to homeless who can bring proof of residence status from a social worker or a shelter. Sliding scale for all others. 1050 Wisconsin Street in Potrero Hill.

Homeless Specific

The 6th Street Self Hep Center – Located at 169 and 181 Sixth Street in downtown, this homeless-focused drop-in center offers medical triage, behavioral health care and massage therapy.

Glide Health Services – Located on the 6th floor of the Glide Memorial Church (at 330 Ellis Street), Glide operates a limited drop-in clinic for primary care via a nurse. Also offered are mental health counselling, acupuncture, chiropractic services and massage.

San Francisco VA Downtown Clinic – Located at 401 Third Street downtown. Primary care clinic services for homeless veterans on-site, and referrals made to Fort Miley for further services.

Tom Waddell Clinic – Primary care clinic also offering mental health and substance abuse treatment services. Services free to homeless clients.

Ethnicity/Gender/Sexuality Specific

Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Wellness Center – Offers testing for HIV and Hepatitis B and C, case management, drop-in primary medical care and counselling services for free. Offices are at 730 Polk Street.

Central American Resource Center – Offers low-cost dental services and free removal of name or gang tattoos to youth. 1245 Alabama Street.

Lyon-Martin Women's Health Services – Free general care clinic for lesbians, bisexual women and transgenders. 1748 Market Street #201.

Magnet – STD testing and treatment for gay men. Also offers mental health services, acupuncture, massage and hypnotherapy. 4122 18th Street.

Cancer Treatment

American Cancer Society – The offices at 300 West Portal Avenue offer counseling, public education classes and smoking cessation classes at no charge. The office at 835 Jackson Street #413 offers transportation to medical appointments for people with cancer, by prior appointment set up by their health care provider.
